Universal Health Services (UHS) is a powerhouse in the American healthcare system—delivering life-changing care through its subsidiaries/hospitals and behavioral health facilities. With 99,000 employees and operations spanning 39 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.K., UHS, through its  subsidiaries, delivers high-quality acute care, behavioral health services, emergency rooms,  outpatient centers and managed health plans. From high-stakes surgeries to vital mental health treatment, UHS touches millions of lives each year

THE CHALLENGE

UHS faced a familiar enterprise challenge: fragmented data  ecosystems across multiple business units. From finance and accounting to talent acquisition and supply chain operations, teams relied on siloed tools—primarily Excel, SSRS and static Crystal reports—limiting collaboration, insight sharing, and time to decision.

Even worse, insights were often only available to technical users. Operational teams were forced to submit reporting requests and wait—delaying the very decisions that could drive performance, efficiency, or cost savings. Executives lacked realtime, consolidated access to KPI’s across 29 hospitals and 1,100+  providers. Manual reporting slowed decision-making and made consistency difficult. It was time for a change.

THE SOLUTION

Seeking to break down silos and democratize access to insights, UHS turned to Pyramid Analytics to modernize their analytics. Their mission: empower business users, unify data workflows, and reduce the friction between data and decisions. Pyramid enabled users across departments to leverage governed self-service as well as collaboration – from clinicians to accountants – without needing deep technical expertise.

The Pyramid platform replaced outdated SSRS, Excel-based reporting and static Crystal reports with dynamic dashboards and real-time modeling that reflected business needs instantly. Pyramid supported centralized oversight with distributed access. Technical teams built governed models, while business users could interact with data confidently – eliminating version control chaos. Pyramid’s custom workflow and annotation features enabled UHS to eliminate the need of Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Additionally, Pyramid’s Tabulate module – a browser-based virtual spreadsheet interface to extend data analysis – aided in increasing user adoption among the Excel users.

UHS rolled out Pyramid across multiple departments in under nine months, thanks to an enablement-focused deployment approach and intuitive UX.

“Pyramid Analytics has helped us speed up insights to our  business and allowed us to become more data-driven,” said Gary Simkus, Division Vice President, Acute  Finance & IPM CFO, Universal Health Services.

THE RESULTS

Modernizing analytics at UHS produces faster insights, smarter decision-making and drives organizational alignment. Over 800 employees (including subsidiary CEOs and CFOs) are trained and actively using the platform, leveraging executive-level dashboards in monthly operating review (MORs) meetings.

With more than a 75% reduction in report turn around, business teams now build and access reports themselves, reducing wait times and boosting  responsiveness. With everyone accessing data from a single source of the truth, collaboration across finance, operations and HR has surged.

UHS now has a modern analytics foundation to support expansion, cost optimization, and patient care initiatives. More importantly, with increased satisfaction and productivity within the business, end users no longer feel “trapped by legacy systems.” Business teams have the confidence and capability to act on data in
real time. Data is now live, contextual and actionable.

By adopting Pyramid Analytics, UHS did not just modernize its BI and Analytics stack—it transformed the role of analytics within the organization. UHS plans next to leverage Pyramid’s text aggregation and LLM features.

“What once required weeks of manual effort is now done in minutes by the people who need the insights most,” added Simkus.
